“The time Deborah spent to understand what makes us tick really paid dividends. The team completely trusts her, and we can’t wait to find an opportunity to work with her again.”

Using natural materials to optimise building performance

Ecological Building Systems delivers building products that focus on the use of natural materials to optimise building performance and durability. The firm was formed in 2000 from the parent company, McCann & Byrne, a well-known timber product manufacturer founded in 1906. The company’s HQ is based in Ireland’s County Meath and has a UK division in Carlisle.

The company prides itself on its technical service, and customers work directly with technical experts who manage the entire sales process and customer journey. This means that their customer-facing team has to sell, present, nurture relationships and deliver technical expertise.

We asked ourselves how we could help and support our technical people more

Company Director, Penny Randell, explains: “We appreciate that we are asking a lot of our people as they manage the end to end process of each customer project. We also have to deal with different target audiences such as architects, engineers and business owners. We asked ourselves how we could help and support our technical people more, and felt it was time we offered our team some structured training to help them develop their communication skills.”

Penny Randell had attended one of Deborah’s open courses called The Effective Trainer and was impressed by her style of delivery.

A relaxed ‘non-corporate’ style was perfect for our culture

“As soon as I met Deborah and experienced her teaching style, I knew she would be the perfect fit for our team,” said Penny. “Her approach is what I would call ‘non-corporate’ and relaxed which was exactly the kind of atmosphere I knew that our people would respond well to.”

Deborah was invited to meet with Penny to discuss putting together a presentation skills workshop that could be run with teams in both Carlisle and County Meath.

I don’t know of any other training provider who puts this much effort into understanding the client

Says Penny: “The amount of time Deborah spent getting to know our culture, our people and their particular needs was very impressive. I don’t know of any other training provider who puts that much effort into understanding the client. This was obvious to everyone on the workshop and was appreciated by all of us, particularly by those in the team who were a bit apprehensive about doing a presentation in front of their peers.

“Deborah understood that our team would not respond well to the standard corporate training model and structured a non-threatening session to put everyone at their ease and get them to work as a team by encouraging supportive and constructive feedback to each other. Everyone felt they were in a safe space.”

Increased confidence and self-awareness

Following the workshops, the company has noticed significant improvements in how the teams in Ireland and the UK interact with customers.

“Everyone is more confident and self-aware when interacting with customers, suppliers and business partners,” said Penny. For example, there was one participant who was not making eye contact well, this individual has totally blossomed since the workshop, and we can see confidence levels growing every day. Others are noticing their body language more, and there’s a myriad of subtle changes happening throughout the organisation.”

“The time Deborah spent to really get under our skin and understand what makes us tick really paid dividends. The team completely trusts her, and we can’t wait to find an opportunity to work with her again.”
